28. His Supplication in Fleeing to God for Protection

Narrated by Imam Ali Zayn al-Abidin

1

allāhumma innī akhlaṣtu bi-inqiṭā‘ī ilayk,

O God, I have become sincere by cutting myself off for You,

2

wa aqbaltu bi-kullī ‘alayk,

and I have turned toward You with my whole being,

3

wa ṣaraftu wajhī ‘amman yaḥtāju ilā rifdik,

and I have turned my face away from him who is in need of Your help,

4

wa qalabtu mas’alatī ‘amman lam yastaghnī ‘an faḍlik,

and I have directed my request away from him who is not independent of Your favour,

5

wa ra’aytu anna ṭalaba al-muḥtāji ilā al-muḥtāj

and I have seen that the request of the needy from the needy

6

safahun min ra’yihī wa ḍallatun min ‘aqlih,

is foolishness in his opinion and an error in his intellect,

7

fa-kam qad ra’aytu yā ilāhī

How many times have I seen, O my God,

8

min unāsin ṭalabū al-‘izza bi-ghayrika fa-dhallū,

people who sought honour from other than You and were humiliated,

9

wa rāmū ath-tharwata min siwāk fa-iftaqarū,

and strove for wealth from other than You and became poor,

10

wa ḥāwalū al-irtifā‘a fa-ittaḍa‘ū,

and attempted elevation and were brought low!

11

fa-ṣaḥḥa bi-mu‘āyanati amthālihim ḥāzimun

Thus, through the observation of their likes, a prudent man is confirmed,

12

waffaqahu i‘tibāruhū

whose consideration makes him successful,

13

wa arshadahū ilā ṭarīqi ṣawābihī ikhtiyāruh.

and whose testing guides him to the path of correctness.

14

fa-anta yā mawlāya

So You, O my Master,

15

dūna kulli mas’ūlin mawḍi‘u mas’alatī

are, before every person asked, the object of my request,

16

wa dūna kulli maṭlūbin ilayhī waliyyu ḥājatī.

and before every person sought, the guardian of my need.

17

antal-makhṣūṣu qabla kulli mad'uwwin bi-da'watī

You are the One singled out before every person prayed to with my supplication.

18

lā yashrukuka aḥadun fī rajā’ī,

No one shares with You in my hope,

19

wa lā yattafiqu aḥadun ma‘ak fī du‘ā’ī,

and no one unites with You in my prayer,

20

wa lā yanẓimuhū wa iyyāka nidā’ī

and my call does not join him and You.

21

lak yā ilāhī waḥdāniyyatu al-‘adad,

Yours, O my God, is the oneness of number,

22

wa malakatu al-qudrati aṣ-ṣamad,

and the sovereignty of eternal, absolute power (aṣ-Ṣamad),

23

wa faḍīlatu al-ḥawl wa al-quwwah,

and the pre-eminence of ability (al-ḥawl) and strength,

24

wa darajatu al-‘uluww wa ar-rif‘ah

and the degree of exaltation and elevation.

25

wa man siwāk marḥūmun fī ‘umrih,

And whoever is other than You is one shown mercy in his life,

26

maghlūbun ‘alā amrih, maqhūrun ‘alā sha’nih,

overpowered in his affair, subdued in his condition,

27

mukhtalifu al-ḥālāt, mutanaqqilun fī aṣ-ṣifāt.

differing in circumstances, shifting in attributes.

28

fa-ta‘ālayta ‘ani al-ashbāh wa al-aḍdād,

So You are exalted beyond all likenesses and opposites,

29

wa takabbarta ‘ani al-amthāl wa al-andād,

and You are too majestic for parallels and peers,

30

fa-subḥānak lā ilāha illā ant.

Glory be to You! There is no god but You.
