6. His Supplication in the Morning and Evening

Narrated by Imam Ali Zayn al-Abidin

1

al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī khalaqa al-layla wa-n-nahāra bi-quwwatihi,

All praise belongs to Allah, who created the night and the day by His power,

2

wa-mayyaza baynahumā bi-qudratihi,

and distinguished between them by His might,

3

wa-jaʿala li-kulli wāḥidin minhumā ḥaddan maḥdūdan, wa-amadan mamdūdan,

and made for each of them a fixed limit and an extended span,

4

yūliju kulla wāḥidin minhumā fī ṣāḥibihi,

He makes one of them enter into the other,

5

wa-yūliju ṣāḥibahu fīhi bi-taqdīrin minhu li-l-ʿibād,

and makes the other enter into it, by His decree for the servants,

6

fīmā yaghdhūhum bihi wa-yunshiʾuhum ʿalayhi,

in what He nourishes them with and raises them upon.

7

fa-khalaqa lahumu al-layla li-yaskunū fīhi min ḥarakāti l-taʿab,

So He created the night for them to rest in, from the movements of weariness,

8

wa-nahaḍāti l-naṣab, wa-jaʿalahu libāsan li-yalbasū min rāḥatihi wa-manāmihi,

and from the risings of exhaustion; and He made it a covering, so they may wear its comfort and its sleep,

9

fa-yakūna dhālika jamāman wa-quwwatan, wa-li-yanālū bihi ladhdhatan wa-shahwatan.

so that it becomes for them rest and strength, and so they may gain through it pleasure and desire.

10

wa-khalaqa lahumu l-nahāra mubṣiran li-yabtaghū fīhi min faḍlihi,

And He created the day bright, so that they may seek in it from His bounty,

11

wa-li-yatasabbabū ilā rizqihi, wa-yasraḥū fī arḍihi,

and that they may strive for His sustenance and roam in His earth,

12

ṭalaban li-mā fīhi naylu l-ʿājili min dunyāhum,

seeking thereby what can be attained quickly from their worldly life,

13

wa-daraku l-ājili fī ukhrāhum. bi-kulli dhālika yuṣliḥu shaʾnahum,

and the attainment of the Hereafter in their next life. Through all this, He sets their affairs aright,

14

wa-yablū akhbārahum wa-yanẓuru kayfa hum fī awqāti ṭāʿatihi,

and tests their deeds, and observes how they are in the times of His obedience,

15

wa-manāzili furūḍihi wa-mawāqiʿi aḥkāmihi,

and the stations of His obligations, and the places of His rulings,

16

li-yajziya alladhīna asāʾū bi-mā ʿamilū wa-yajziya alladhīna aḥsanū bi-l-ḥusnā.

so that He may recompense those who did evil with what they did, and reward those who did good with the best reward.

17

allāhumma fa-laka l-ḥamdu ʿalā mā falaqta lanā mina l-iṣbāḥ,

O Allah! To You belongs all praise for what You split for us of the morning light,

18

wa-mattaʿtanā bihi min ḍawʾi l-nahār,

and for giving us enjoyment in it of the brightness of the day,

19

wa-baṣṣartanā min maṭālibi l-aqwāt,

and for showing us the paths of seeking our sustenance,

20

wa-waqaytanā fīhi min ṭawāriqi l-āfāt,

and for protecting us in it from sudden calamities.

21

aṣbaḥnā wa-aṣbaḥati l-ashyāʾu kulluhā bi-jumlatihā laka,

We have entered the morning, and all things altogether belong to You:

22

samāʾuhā wa-arḍuhā wa-mā baththta fī kulli wāḥidin minhumā,

its heavens and its earth, and whatever You have spread in each of them,

23

sākinuhu wa-mutaḥarrikuhu wa-muqīmuhu wa-shākhiṣu,

its still and its moving, its settled and its departing,

24

wa-mā ʿalā fī l-hawāʾ wa-mā kanna taḥta l-tharā,

whatever rises in the air, and whatever lies hidden beneath the soil.

25

aṣbaḥnā fī qabḍatika, yaḥwīnā mulkuka wa-sulṭānuka,

We have entered the morning within Your grasp, encompassed by Your dominion and authority,

26

wa-taḍummunā mashīyyatuka, wa-nataṣarrfu ʿan amrika, wa-nataqallabu fī tadbīrika,

and encompassed by Your will; we move only by Your command, and we change only by Your management,

27

laysa lanā mina l-amri illā mā qaḍayta, wa-lā mina l-khayri illā mā aʿṭayta,

we have no affair except what You have decreed, and no good except what You have granted.

28

wa-hādhā yawmun ḥādithun jadīdun, wa-huwa ʿalaynā shāhidun ʿatīdun,

And this is a new day, and it is a present witness over us,

29

in aḥsannā wadaʿanā bi-ḥamdin, wa-in asāʾnā fāraqanā bi-dhamm,

if we do good, it leaves us with praise; and if we do evil, it leaves us with blame.

30

allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O Allah, bless Muhammad and his family,

31

wa rzqunā ḥusna muṣāḥabatihi waʿṣimnā,

Grant us good companionship with him and protect us,

32

min sū’i mufāraqatihī bi irtikābi jarīrah,

From the harm of parting from him by committing a sin,

33

aw iqtirāfi ṣaghīrah aw kabīrah,

Whether committing a small or large sin.

34

wa ajzil lanā fīhi mina al-ḥasanāti wa akhlinā fīhi mina as-sayyi’āt,

And generously grant us in it good deeds and spare us from evils.

35

wa amla’ lanā mā bayna ṭarafayhi ḥamdan wa shukran wa ajran wa dhukhran wa faḍlan wa iḥsānan,

And fill for us between its two edges with praise, thanks, reward, treasure, bounty, and goodness.

36

allāhumma yassir ʿalā al-kirāmi al-kātibīn ma’ūnatana,

O Allah, ease for the noble scribes our provision,

37

wa amla’ lanā min ḥasanātinā ṣaḥā’ifana,

And fill our pages with our good deeds.

38

wa lā tukhzinā ʿindahum bisū’i aʿmālinā,

And do not disgrace us before them by our bad deeds.

39

allāhumma ijʿal lanā fī kulli sāʿatin min sāʿātihi ḥaẓẓan min ʿibādika,

O Allah, make for us in every hour of its hours a share among Your servants,

40

wa naṣīban min shukrika wa shāhida ṣidqin min malāʾikatika,

And a portion of Your thanks and a truthful witness from Your angels.

41

allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa ālihi,

O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad and his family,

42

wa iḥfaẓnā min bayni aydīnā wa min khalfina wa ʿan aymānina wa ʿan shamā’ilina,

And protect us from before us, behind us, from our right and our left,

43

wa min jamīʿi nawāḥinā ḥifẓan ʿāṣiman min maʿṣiyatika,

And from all our directions, a protective guard from Your disobedience,

44

hādiyān ilā ṭāʿatika mustaʿmilan li maḥabbatika,

Guiding us to obey You and using us for Your love.

45

allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa ālihi

O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad and his family,

46

wa waffiqnā fī yawmnā hādhā wa laylatinā hādhihi wa fī jamīʿi ayyāminā,

And grant us success on this day of ours, this night, and all our days,

47

For practicing good, abandoning evil, and being grateful for blessings,

48

wa itti'bāʿi as-sunan wa mujānabati al-bidaʿ,

Following the traditions and avoiding innovations,

49

wa al-amri bil-maʿrūf wa an-nahy ʿan al-munkar,

Enjoining good and forbidding evil,

50

wa ḥiyāṭati al-islām wa intiqāṣi al-bāṭil wa idhlālih,

Protecting Islam and reducing falsehood and humiliating it,

51

wa nuṣrati al-ḥaqq wa iʿzāzihi, wa irshādi aḍ-ḍāll,

Supporting the truth and elevating it, and guiding the lost,

52

wa muʿāwanati aḍ-ḍaʿīf wa idrāki al-laṭīf,

Helping the weak and attaining the subtle kindness.

53

allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa ālihi

O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad and his family,

54

wa jʿalhu ayman yawmin ʿahadnāhu,

And make it the most auspicious day we have ever pledged,

55

wa afḍala ṣāḥib ṣiḥibnāhu,

And the best companion we have accompanied,

56

wa khayra waqtin ẓalalnā fīhi,

And the best time we have lived in.

57

wa jʿalnā min ardā man marra ʿalayhi al-laylu wa an-nahāru min jumlat khalqik,

And make us among those most pleasing to whom the night and day pass of Your creation,

58

wa ashkarahum limā awlayta min niʿamik,

And the most grateful for what You have given in blessings,

59

wa aqwamahum bimā sharaʿta min sharāʾiʿik,

And the most upright in following Your laws,

60

wa awqafahum ʿammā ḥadhharta min nahyik,

And the one who restrains himself from what You have warned against forbidding.

61

allāhumma innī ashhaduka wa kafā bika shahīdan wa ush-hidu samāʾaka wa arḍaka,

O Allah, I bear witness to You and enough is You as a witness, and I call upon Your sky and Your earth,

62

wa man askantahumā min malāʾikatika wa sāʾiri khalqika fī yawmi hādhā,

And those You have made inhabit them of Your angels and all Your creation on this day of mine,

63

wa sāʿatī hādhihi, wa laylatī hādhihi, wa mustaqarrī hādhā,

And this hour of mine, this night of mine, and this resting place of mine,

64

annī ash-hadu annaka anta allāhu alladhī

That I bear witness that You are Allah who

65

lā ilāha illā anta qā’imun bil-qisṭ,

There is no deity but You, established in justice,

66

ʿadlun fī al-ḥukmi, raʾūfun bil-ʿibād,

Just in judgment, compassionate to the servants,

67

māliku al-mulki raḥīmun bil-khalq,

Master of the kingdom, merciful to creation,

68

wa anna muḥammadan ʿabduka wa rasūluka wa khīyaratuka min khalqik,

And that Muḥammad is Your servant and messenger and Your chosen among Your creation,

69

hammaltahu risālataka fa addāhā wa amartahu bin-nuṣḥ li ummatihi fa naṣaḥa lahā,

You entrusted him with Your message, and he delivered it and commanded earnest advice for his nation, so he advised them well.

70

allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa ālihi akthara mā ṣallayta ʿalā aḥadin min khalqik,

O Allah, send blessings upon Muḥammad and his family more than You have sent blessings on anyone of Your creation,

71

wa ātih ʿannā afḍala mā ātayta aḥadan min ʿibādik,

And grant him on our behalf the best of what You have given any of Your servants,

72

wa ajzih ʿannā afḍala wa akrama mā jazayta aḥadan min anbiyā’ika ʿan ummatih,

And reward him on our behalf the best and most generous of what You rewarded any of Your prophets for his nation.

73

inna ka anta al-mannān bi al-jasīm al-ghāfir lil-ʿaẓīm,

Indeed, You are the Benefactor, the Great, the Forgiver of the Great sins,

74

wa anta arḥamu min kulli raḥīm,

And You are more Merciful than all who show mercy,

75

fa ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa ālihi

So send blessings on Muḥammad and his family,

76

aṭ-ṭayyibīn aṭ-ṭāhirīn al-akhyār al-anjabīn.

The pure, the clean, the good, the most noble.
