Dua an-Nudba

Prayer of Lamentation

Narrated by Imam Jafar Sadiq

1

bismillaahir rahmaanir raheem

In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Most Compassionate.

2

alhamdo lillaahe rabbil a'alameena

Praise belongs to God, the Nurturing Lord of all worlds,

3

wa sallallaaho a'laa sayyedenaa mohammadin

and the blessings and peace of God be on our Noble Leader Muhammad,

4

nabiyyehi wa aalehi wa sallama tasleeman

His Prophet, and on his children.

5

allaahumma lakal hamdo a'laa maa jaraa behi qazaaa-oka fee awleyaaa-ekal

O my God! All praise belongs to You for the case that you settled and resolved concerning Your friends,

6

lazeenas takhlastahum lenafseka wa deeneka

whom You purified for Yourself and Your religion.

7

ezikh tarta lahum jazeela maa i'ndaka menan na-e'emil moqeemil

When wisdom and the high status You give prostrated themselves in adoration before them,

8

lazee laa zawaala lahu wa laz-mehlaala

for which there is no decrease or disappearance,

9

ba'da an sharatta a'layhemuz zohda fee darajaate haazehid dunyad daniyyate

then You commanded for them piety and righteousness. While they were in this mean and crooked world,

10

zukhrofehaa wa zibrejehaa

themselves free from its vanity and seductions,

11

fa-sharatoo laka zaaleka wa 'alimta minhomul wafaaa-a behi faqabiltahum wa qarrabtahum

Your supreme authority made their identity known; and equipped them with Sincerity and Perfection that stood surety and a guarantee for them and communicated intimately with them,

12

wa qaddamta lahomuz zikral a'liyya was sanaaa-al jaliyya

sent the news of their fortunate arrival in advance, and praised them

13

wa ahbatta a'layhim malaaa-ekataka wa karramtahum be-wah-yeka

in clear terms for the benefit of all. They fell down on the ground in prostration; with Your angels before them, You chose them to reveal Your Words,

14

wa rafadtahum be-i'lmeka

gave them Your Wisdom as a gift,

15

wa ja-a'ltahomuz zaree-a'ta elayka wal waseelata elaa rizwaaneka

and set them up as the only medium to reach You, the only means to the eternal land of peace and happiness.

16

fa-ba'-zun askantahu jannataka elaa an akhrajtahu minhaa

One dwelled in Paradise until You sent him down (as the first Prophet).

17

wa ba'-zun hamaltahu fee fulkeka wa najjaytahu wa man aamana ma-a'hu menal halakate berahmateka

One was made to pilot the Ark, and was rescued, and kept safe from destruction through Your mercy.

18

wa ba'-zun ittakhaztahu lenafseka khaleelan wa sa-alaka lesaana sidqin

One was chosen and prepared for Your Mission as Your Friend, who made a request to You for a good testimony

19

fil aakhereena fa-ajabtahu wa ja-a'lta zaaleka a'liyyan

to his descendants. So You approved and agreed to this request, amd exalted them and gave them authority.

20

wa ba'-zun kallamtahu min shajaratin takleeman

One You spoke to directly through the Tree,

21

wa ja-a'lta lahu min akheehe rid-an wa wazeeran

while hiis brother was appointed his successor and helper.

22

wa ba'-zun awladtahu min ghayre abin

One was born without a father,

23

wa aataytahul bayyenaate wa ayyadtahu be-roohil qodose

Was given clear proofs, and supported by the Holy Spirit.

24

wa kullun shara'-ta lahu sharee-a'tan

For each You prescribed a Sacred Law

25

wa nahajta lahu minhaajan wa takhayyarta lahu awseyaaa-a

and set out a marked out path. To each was appointed a guardian-executor,

26

mustahfezan ba'-da mustahfezin min muddatin elaa muddatin

(each one of them) fulfilled their duty, after being kept safe and protected

27

eqaamatan le-deeneka wa hujjatan a'laa e'baadeka

in the time of establishing Your religion. (They were) a witness and argument to Your servants,

28

wa le-allaa yazoolal haqqo a'n maqarrehi wa yaghlebal baatelo a'laa ahlehi

so that the truth would not be shaken from its firm stand and foundation, and falsehood conquer people's hearts,

29

wa laa yaqoola ahadun lawlaa arsalta elaynaa rasoolan munzeran

and so no one might say: "If only You had sent a Messenger to us as a Warner,

30

wa aqamta lanaa a'laman haadeyan

to show us the path of wisdom and guidance,

31

fanattabe-a' aayaateka min qable an nazilla wa nakhzaa

so that we might have followed Your revelations before we were humbled and disgraced!"

32

elaa anin tahayta bil-amre elaa habeebeka wa najeebeka mohammadin sallallaaho a'layhe wa aalehi

You made plans to introduce the wonderful arrival of Muhammad (send blessings on him and on his children).

33

fa-kaana kaman tajabtahu sayyeda man khalaqtahu

So just as You chose him, O Master of anyone You create,

34

wa safwata manis- tafaytahu wa afzala manij tabaytahu

You made this man, whom You selected, pure, clean and the best, and exalted and praised the person you elected,

35

wa akrama manea' tamadtahu qaddamtahu a'laa ambeyaaa-eka

he surpassed in generosity and liberality while You bestowed high-mindedness and good-will upon him (whom You took in confidence and relied upon); you made him Commander-in-Chief of (all) Your Prophets,

36

wa ba-a'stahu elas-saqalayne min e'baadeka

and sent him to the troubled world of men and jinn (spirits), among Your servants;

37

wa aw-taatahu mashaareqaka wa maghaarebaka wa sakhkharta lahul boraaqa

You lowered and humbled the East and the West before him, and all affairs were brought under his total control.

38

wa a'rajta be roohe-hi elaa samaaa-eka

You exalted his soul in Your heavens,

39

wa awda'-tahu i'lma maa kaana wa maa yakoono elan qezaaa-e khalqeka

You gave to him the knowledge of what took place and what will happen, concerning the facts and the operations of the created universe;

40

summa nasartahu bir roa'-be

Then You invested him with awe

41

wa hafaftahu be-jabra-eela wa meekaa-eela wal mosawwemeena min malaaa-ekateka

and majesty. Gabriel, Micahel, and other distinguished Angels stood around

42

wa wa-aztahu an tuzhera deenahu a'lad deene kullehi wa law-karehal mushrekoona

him at his beck and call, gave Your word to him that You would make his religion prevail over all religions, however much idolaters might hate it.

43

wa zaaleka ba'-da an bawwa-tahu mobawwa-a sidqin min ahlehi

Thereafte, Your acknowledged his atonement and provided goodness and perfection for his children,

44

wa ja-a'lta lahu wa lahum awwala baytin woze-a' lin-naase

You allotted for him and his children the first sanctuary appointed for humanity,

45

lal-lazee be-bakkata mobaarakan wa hodal lil a'alameena

at Mecca, a blessed place, a guidance to the people,

46

feehe aayaatun bayyenaatun maqaamo ibraaheema wa man dakhalahu kaana aamenan

In which are plain and clear signs; the place where Abraham stood up to pray, and whoever enters it is safe.

47

wa qulta innamaa yoreedullaaho le-yuzheba a'nkomur rijsa

You said: "God’s wish is but to remove uncleanness

48

اَهْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَ يُطَهِّرَكُمْ تَطْهيراً }

ahlal bayte wa yotahherakum tayouraa

far from you, O People of the House, and purify you with a thorough purification."

49

summa ja-a'lta ajra mohammadin salawaatoka a'layhe wa aalehi mawaddatahum fee ketaabeka

Afterwards You conclusively established the payment of Muhammad (Your blessings be on him and on his children) and love for them, in Your Holy Book.

50

فَقُلْتَ: { قُلْ لا اَسْاَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ اَجْراً اِلاَّ الْمَوَدَّةَ فِى الْقُرْبى }

fa-qulta qul laa as-alokum a'layhe ajran illal mawaddata fil qurbaa

So You said: "Say (O Muhammad): I ask of you no payment, except for love of my relatives."

51

وَ قُلْتَ : { ما سَألْتُكُمْ مِنْ اَجْرٍ فَهُو َلَكُمْ }

wa qulta maa sa-altokum min ajrin fahowa lakum

And You said: "Whatever payment I have asked for you, it is only for yourselves."

52

وَ قُلْتَ : { ما اَسْاَلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ اَجْرٍ الّا مَنْ شاءَ اَنْ يَتَّخِذَ اِلى رَبِّهِ سَبيلاً }

wa qulta maa as-alokum a'layhe min ajrin illaa man shaaa-a ayn yattakheza elaa rabbehi sabeelan

And You said: "I ask of you no reward for this, except that, whoever wills it, chooses a way to his Lord."

53

fa-kaanoo homus sabeela elayka wal maslaka elaa rizwaaneka

Therefore, they are the (only) means to (approach) You, the (only) medium to get Your favours.

54

falamman qazat ayyaamohu aqaama waliyyahu a'liyyabna abee taalebin salawaatoka a'layhemaa wa aalehemaa haadeyan

So, You certainly did not let his hard work go to waste, and You gave authority to his successor, Ali ibn Abi Talib, (Your blessings be on them both, and on this children), a guide.

55

iz kaana howal munzera wa le-kulle qawmin haadin fa-qaala wal mala-o amaamahu

At the time when he was made a warner and a guide for every people, the Holy Prophet, their Guide, said in a public meeting overflowing with people,

56

man kunto mawlaaho fa-a'liyyun mawlaaho

"Anyone for whom I am a Patron, Ali is his Patron.

57

allaahumma waale man waalaaho wa a'ade man a'adaaho wan-sur man nasarahu wakh-zul man khazalahu

O God! Be a friend of him who is a friend of him, be an enemy of him who is an enemy of him, help that man who helps him, abandons that man who anbandons him."

58

wa qaala man kunto anaa nabiyyahu fa-a'liyyun ameerohu

He said: "Anyone for whom I am the Prophet, Ali is his Commander."

59

wa qaala anaa wa a'lyyun min shajaratin waahedatin wa saa-irun naaso min shajarin shattaa

And he said: "I and Ali are one root of a tree, and the rest of humanity are like diverse plants,

60

wa ahallahu mahalla haaroona min moosaa

He expresses the relationship of Aaron to Moses."

61

fa qaala lahu anta minnee be-manzelate haaroona min moosaa illaa annahu laa nabiyya ba'-dee

Therefore he told him: "I am to you as Moses was to Aaron, but certainly there is no Prophet after me."

62

wa zawwajahub-natahu sayyedata nesaaa-il a'alameena

Ali’s life partner was his Muhammad's daughter, the Noble Leader of the women of all worlds.

63

wa ahalla lahu min masjedehi maa halla lahu wa saddal abwaaba illaa baabahu

Whatever was permitted for Muhammad in the Mosque, was lawful was for Ali. All doors were closed, except for his door.

64

summa awda-a'hu i'lmahu wa hikmatahu

Muhammad gave his knowledge and wisdom into Ali’s keeping.

65

fa-qaala anaa madeenatul i'lme wa a'liyyun baabohaa

He said: "I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate.

66

faman araadal madeenata wal hikmata falyaatehaa min baabehaa

Whoever wants to approach and live in the city of knowledge and wisdom should come through its door."

67

summa qaala anta akhee wa wasiyyee wa waaresee

Thereafter he said: "You are my brother, successor and inheritor,

68

lahmoka min lahmee wa damoka min damee wa silmoka silmee wa harboka harbee

Your flesh is my flesh, your blood is my blood, your truce is my truce, your fight is my fight,

69

wal eemaano mokhaaletun lahmaka wa damaka kamaa khaalata lahmee wa damee

Faith is blended, mixed and mingled in your flesh and blood, just as it is compounded in my flesh and blood,

70

wa anta ghadan a'lal hawze khaleefatee

and tomorrow you will take charge of the reservoir of my inheritance.

71

wa anta taqzee daynee wa tunjezo e'daatee

You are the fulfilment of my religion, you will execute and keep alive my way of life,

72

wa shee-a'toka a'laa manaabera min noorin mubyazzatan wojoohohum hawlee fil jannate wa hum jeeraanee

Your friends and followers will speak with authority, command respect and hold the torch of good manners and courtesy, their faces will be around me in the eternal land of peace and bliss (Paradise), in my close company.

73

wa law-laa anta yaa a'liyyo lam yoa'-rafil mo-minoona ba'-dee

Were it not for you, O Ali, the believers would not know the truth after me."

74

wa kaana ba'-dahu hodan menaz zalaale wa nooran menal a'maa wa hablallaahil mateena wa seraatahul mustaqeema

After Muhammad, Ali was the guide for the wanderers, a bright light in the blind darkness, the strong rope of God, and the right path.

75

laa yusbaqo beqaraabatin fee rahemin wa laa be-saabeqatin fee deenin

He never kept back his kindness and compassion for ordinary people, and he never made excuses or delayed giving priority to religious matters;

76

wa laa yulhaqo fee manqabatin min manaaqebehee

nor did he blow his own trumpet or feel proud of his glory.

77

yahzoo hazwar rasoole sallallaahu a'layhemaa wa aalehemaa

He did the same thing the Messenger used to do (the blessing of God be on them both and on their children).

78

wa yoqaatelo a'lat taaweele wa laa taa-khozohu fillaahe lawmato laaa-emin

He put an end to misinterpretations, and for the sake of God, did not lose his temper, if any one turned to mud-slinging and name-calling.

79

qad watara feehe sanaadeedal a'rabe wa qatala abtaalahum wa naawasha zoa-baanahum

He had thrown the proud tribal chiefs of Arabia into a fright, destroyed their heroes, attacked and dispersed their cavalries.

80

fa-awda-a' qoloobahum ahqaadan badriyyatan wa khaybariyyatan wa honayniyyatan wa ghayra hunna

Because of this, hatred and resentment took root in their hearts. (The battles of ) Badr, Khaybar, and Hunain created jealousy and envy in them.

81

fa-azabbat a'laa a'daawatehi wa akabbat a'laa monaabazatehi

Therefore, they united and joined hands to oppose him, and came out in great numbers to fight against him;

82

hattaa qatalan naakeseena wal qaaseteena wal maareqeena

Untill he destroyed all deserters, who had swerved from what was right, the shameless who had deviated from true religion,

83

wa lammaa qazaa nahbahu wa qatalahu ashqal aakhereena yatba-o' ashqal awwaleena

While he was carrying out the important mission. He killed a malicious criminal, a contemporary, who served the interest and followed the doctrine of earlier disrespectful villians.

84

lam yumtasal amro rasoolillaahe sallallaaho a'layhe wa aalehee fil haadeena ba'-dal haadeena

They took an unprecedented and bizarre approach to the directions of the Messenger of God,(blessings of God be on him and on his children), concerning the Imams, one after the other.

85

wal ummato mosirratun a'laa maqtehi

The narrow-minded and obstinate ummah did not care for him, and had ill-feelings towards him.

86

mujtame-a'tun a'laa qatee-a'te rahemehi wa iqsaa-e wuldehee

They flocked together to pass up and deny his connection to his family, and pushed his children out of their way,

wa arehee sayyedahu yaa shadeedal qowaa wa azil a'nho behil asaa wal jawaa

Show them the face of their Leader, O Almighty! Allow him to put an end to evil and corruption,
