Ziyarat Ashura

السَّلام عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللهِ،

assalaamo a'alayka yabna rasoolillaahe

Peace be upon you, O son of the Apostle of God!

السَّلام عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ أمِيرِ المُؤْمِنينَ،

assalaamo a'layka yabna ameeril momineena

Peace be upon you, O son of the commander of the faithful,

وَابْنَ سَيِّدِ الوَصِيِّينَ،

wabna sayyedil wasiyyeena

the forefather of the successors!

السَّلام عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ فاطِمَةَ الزّهراءِ سَيِّدَةِ نِساءِ العالَمِينَ،

assalaamo a'layka yabna faatemaata sayyedate nesaail a'alameena

Peace be upon you, O son of Fatimah, the most precious among the women of all worlds!

السَّلام عَلَيْكَ يَا ثَارَ اللهِ وابْنَ ثارِهِ وَالْوِتْرَ المَوْتُورَ،

assalaamo a'layka yaa saarallaahe wabna saarehee wal witral mawtoora

Peace be upon you, O vengeance of Allah, son of His vengeance, and the unavenged so far.

السَّلام عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى الأرواحِ الّتي حَلّتْ بِفِنائِكَ،

assalaamo a'layka wa a'lal arwaahil latee hallat be fenaa-eka

Peace be upon you and your supporters who knelt before you in allegiance and remained loyally by your side.

عَلَيْكُمْ مِنّي جَميعاً سَلامُ اللهِ أبَداً ما بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ الليْلُ وَالنَّهارُ.

a'laykum minnee jamee-a'n salaamul laahe abadan maa baqeeto wa baqeyal laylo wan nahaaro

I pray and invoke God to keep all of you tranquil and restful, forever; so long as I am alive, this is my prayer, and as long as there are day and night.

يَا أبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ،

yaa abaa a'bdillaahe

O Aba Abdillah (Father of the servant of God)!

لَقَدْ عَظُمَتِ الرَّزِيَّةُ ، وجَلّتْ وعَظُمَتْ المُصِيبَةُ

laqad a'zomatir raziyyato wa jallat wa a'zomatil moseebato

Unbearable is the sorrow, nerve-racking is the agony you put up with,

بِكَ عَلَيْنا وَعَلَى جَمِيعِ أهْلِ الإسلام،

a'laynaa wa a'laa jami'e ahlil islaame

for us and for all (true) Muslims,

وَجَلَّتْ وَعَظُمَتْ مُصِيبَتُكَ فِي السَّمَوَاتِ عَلَى جَمِيعِ أهْلِ السَّمَوَاتِ،

wa jallat wa a'zomat moseebatoka fis samaawaate a'laa jamee-e' ahlis samaawaate

the crimes committed against you also shocked and unnerved the dwellers of the heavens, one and all.

فَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً أسَّسَتْ أساسَ الظُّلْمِ وَالجَوْرِ عَلَيْكُمْ أهْلَ البَيْتِ،

fa la-a'nallaaho ummatan assasat asaasaz zulme wal jawre a'laykum ahlal bayte

May God condemn and damn the people who laid the foundation and set up the groundwork for wandering astray and turn aside from you and your family, and even taking liberties and bearing hard upon you;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً دَفَعَتْكُمْ عَنْ مَقامِكُمْ

wa la-a'nallaaho ummatan dafa-a'tkum a'n moqaamekum

May God condemn and damn the people who tried to obscure and deny your official role and special position,

وَأزالَتْكُمْ عَنْ مَراتِبِكُمُ الّتِي رَتَّبَكُمُ اللهُ فِيها،

wa azaalatkum a'n maraatebokomullatee rattabakomullaaho feehaa

willfully neglecting your rank and class that God had made known in clear terms.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكُمْ،

wa la-a'nallaaho ummatan qatalatkum

May God condemn and damn the people who killed you.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ الْمُمَهِّدِينَ لَهُمْ بِالتَّمْكِينِ مِنْ قِتالِكُمْ،

wa la-a'nallaahul momah-hedeena lahum bit tamkeene min qetaalekum

May God condemn and damn the abettors who instigated and had a part in your murder.

بَرِئْتُ إلى اللهِ وَإلَيْكُمْ مِنْهُمْ

barea-to ilallaahe wa ilaykum minhum

I turn to you and God, away from them,

وَمِنْ أشْياعِهِمْ وَأتْباعِهِمْ وَأوْلِيائِهِمْ.

wa min ashyaa-i'him wa atbaa-e'him wa awleyaaehim

their henchmen, their followers and their friends.

يَا أبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ،

yaa abaa a'bdillaahe

O Aba Abdillah (Father of the servant of God)!

إنِّي سِلْمٌ لِمَنْ سالَمَكُمْ،

innee silmun leman saalamakum

I make peace with those who make their peace with you,

وَحَرْبٌ لِمَنْ حارَبَكُمْ

wa harbun leman haarabakum

I make war on those who go to war against you.

وَوليٌ لِمَنْ والاكُم

wa waliyyun liman waalaakum

I am his friend who is a friend of yours,

وعدوٌّ لِمَنْ عَاداكُمْ إلى يَوْمِ القِيامَةِ،

wa 'aduwwun liman 'aadaakum elaa yawmil qeyaamate

And I am his enemy who shows enmity towards you, until the Day of Judgement.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ آل زِيَاد وَآلَ مَرْوانَ،

la-a'nallaaho aala zeyaadin wa aala marwaana

May God condemn and damn the family of Ziyaad and the family of Marwaan;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ بَنِي اُمَيَّةَ قاطِبَةً،

wa la-a'nallaaho banee umayyata qaatebatan

may God condemn and damn the group and the tribe of Umayyah, one and all, altogether;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ ابْنَ مَرْجانَةَ،

wa la-a'nallaahubna marjaanat

may God condemn and damn the son of Marjaanah;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ عُمَرَ بْنَ سَعْد،

wa la-a'nallaaho o'marabna saa'din

may God condemn and damn Umar son of Saad;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ شِمْراً،

wa la-a'nallaaho shimran

may God condemn and damn Shimr;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً أسْرَجَتْ وَألْجَمَتْ وَتَهيّأتْ وَتَنَقَّبَتْ لِقِتالِكَ،

wa la-a'nallaaho ummatan asrajat wa aljamat wa tanaqqabat le qetaaleka

may God condemn and damn the people who bridled the horses and set up the saddles for your martyrdom.

بِأبِي أنْتَ وَاُمِّي لَقَدْ عَظُمَ مُصابِي بِكَ،

be abee anta wa ummee laqad a'zoma mosaabee beka

I, my father and my mother are at your disposal. Profound is my sorrow for you.

فَأسْالُ اللهَ الّذِي أكْرَمَ مَقامَكَ ، وَأكْرَمَنِي بِكَ،

fa asalullaahal lazee akrama maqaamaka wa akramanee beka

I beg God, who honored you above (all) others, to be generous towards me on account of you,

أنْ يَرْزُقَني طَلَبَ ثارِكَ مَعَ إمام مَنْصُور

an yarzoqanee talaba saareka ma-a' emaamin mansoorin

and give me the opportunity to be with the victorious Imam, at the time of the final and decisive war against God's enemies;

مِنْ أهْلِ بَيْتِ مُحَمَّد صَلّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ.

min ahle bayte muhammadin sallallaaho a'layhe wa aalehee

the descendent of Muhammad (blessings and peace from God be on him and on his children).

اللهمّ اجْعَلْني عِنْدَكَ وَجِيهاً بِالحُسَيْنِ عَلَيهِ السَّلام

allaahummaja'lnee i'ndaka wa jeehan bil husayne alayhis salaam

O, my God, make me attend to Your cause, sincerely; in every way following in Husayn's footsteps,

في الدُّنْيا وَالآخِرَةِ.

fid dunyaa wal aaakherate

in this world and in the Hereafter.

يَا أبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ،

yaa abaa a'bdillaahe

O Aba Abdillah (Father of the servant of God)!

إنِّي أتَقَرَّبُ إلى اللهِ تعالى ، وَإلَى رَسُولِهِ،

innee ataqarrabo elallaahe wa elaa rasoolehee

I pray and invoke God to send blessings on you. I come nearer and seek greater intimacy with God, with His Apostle,

وَإلى أمِيرِ المُؤْمِنينَ ، وَإلَى فاطِمَةَ،

wa elaa ameeril momineena wa elaa faatemata

with the Commander of the Faithful, with Fatimah,

وإلى الحَسَنِ وَإلَيْكَ بِمُوالاتِكَ،

wa elal hasane wa elayka be mawaalaateka

with Hasan and with you, with the help of your love and patronage,

وَبِالبراءِةِ مِمَّنْ أسَّسَ أساسَ ذلِكَ،

wa bil-baraa'ati mimman assasa asaasa zaaleka

free from the guilt of associating with those who laid the foundation for (your suffering),

وَبَنى عَلَيْهِ بُنْيانَهُ،

wa banaa a'layhe bunyaanahu

devised and carried out their corrupt plan of action,

وَجَرَى في ظُلْمِهِ وَجَوْرِهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلَى أشْياعِكُمْ،

wa jaraa fee zulmehee wa jawrehi a'laykum wa a'laa ashyaa-e'kum

boldly established a reign of terror and cruelty to oppress you and your friends and followers.

بَرِئْتُ إلى اللهِ وَإلَيْكُمْ مِنْهُمْ،

baria'to elallaahe wa elaykum minhum

I detach myself from them and present myself to God and to you,

وَأتَقَرَّبُّ إلى اللهِ وَإلى رَسولِهِ

wa ataqarrabo elallaahe wa elaa rasoolihi

I (first) seek greater intimacy with God and then with you to win your love and patronage,

ثُمَّ إلَيْكُمْ بِمُوالاتِكُم وَمُوالاةِ وَلِيِّكُمْ،

summa elaykum be mawaalaatekum wa mowaalaate waliyyekum

and to make friends with your friends.

وَبِالْبَرَاءَةِ مِنْ أعْدائِكُمْ ،وَالنَّاصِبِينَ لَكُم الحَرْبَ،

wa bil baraaa-ate min aa'-daaa-ekum wan naasebeena lakomul harba

I cut off all links with your enemies, and with those who planted the seeds of hostility against you,

وَبِالبَرَاءَةِ مِنْ أشْياعِهِمْ وَأتْباعِهِمْ،

wa bil baraaa-ate min ashyaa-i'him wa atbaa-e'him

and reject and discard their associates, their followers and their friends.

إنِّي سِلْمٌ لِمَنْ سالَمَكُمْ،

innee silmun leman saalamakum

I make peace with those who made their peace with you,

وَحَرْبٌ لِمَنْ حارَبَكُمْ،

wa harbun leman haarabakum

I search out and confront those who waged war against you,

وَوَلِيٌّ لِمَنْ والاكُمْ،

wa waliyyun leman waalaakum

I make friends with those who stood by you,

وَعَدُوٌّ لِمَنْ عاداكُمْ،

wa a'duwwun leman a'adaakum

I strive against those who came in conflict with you; therefore,

فَأسْألُ اللهَ الّذِي أكْرَمَني بِمَعْرِفَتِكُمْ ، وَمَعْرِفَةِ أوْلِيائِكُمْ،

fa as-alullaahallazee akramanee be maa'refatekum wa maa'refate awleyaaaekum

I make a request to God to endow (me) with the awareness that perceives you and your friends,

وَرَزَقَني البَراءَةَ مِنْ أعْدائِكُمْ،

wa razaqanil baraaa-ata min aa'-daaa-ekum

to set me free from the corrupting influence of your enemies,

أنْ يَجْعَلَني مَعَكُمْ في الدُّنْيا وَالآخِرَةِ،

an yaj-a'lanee ma-a'kum fid dunyaa wal aakherate

to make me keep company with you in this world and in the Hereafter,

وَأنْ يُثَبِّتَ لي عِنْدَكُمْ قَدَمَ صِدْق في الدُّنْيا وَالآخِرَةِ،

an yusabbeta lee i'ndakum qadama sidqin fid dunyaa wal aakherate

to stand firm beside you and follow your footsteps closely in this world and in the next world.

وَأسْألُهُ أنْ يُبَلِّغَنِي الْمقامَ الْمَحْمُودَ لَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللهِ،

wa as-alohoo an yoballeghanil maqaamal mahmooda lakum i'ndallaahe

I beg Him that he helps me to reach your highly praised status, given to you by God; (to meet you);

وَأنْ يَرْزُقَنِي طَلَبَ ثَارِي مَعَ إمَام هُديً ظَاهِرٍ نَاطِقٍ بالحقِّ مِنْكُمْ،

wa an yarzoqanee talaba saaree ma-a' emaamin hodan zaherin naateqin bil haqqe minkum

that He provide me the opportunity to fight for justice and righteousness, along with and under the leadership of the Rightly Guided Guide (from your descendants) who surely will come and speak the truth;

وَأسْألُ اللهَ بِحَقِّكُمْ وَبِالشَّأنِ الَّذِي لَكُمْ عِنْدَهُ

wa as-alullaaha be-haqqekum wa bishshaanil lazee lakum i'ndahu

I beg God in the name of your right and the purpose He assigned to you,

أنْ يُعْطِيَنِي بِمُصابِي بِكُمْ أفْضَلَ ما يُعْطِي مصاباً بِمُصِيبَتِهِ،

an yoa'-teyanee be mosaabee bekum afzala maa yoa'-tee mosaaban be-moseebatin

that He overwhelm me with grief in the memory of your sorrows, more than the personal grief that torments anyone who is in great agony,

مُصِيبَةً مَا أعْظَمَها وَأعْظَمَ رَزِيَّتهَا فِي الإسلام

moseebatan maa aa'-zamahaa wa aa'-zama raziyyatahaa fil islaame

sorrows which have no parallel and overshadow all calamities that took place in the history of Islam;

وَفِي جَمِيعِ السَّموَاتِ وَالارْضِ.

wa fee jamee-i's samaawaate wal arz

or for that matter, throughout the whole universe.

اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْني في مَقامِي هذا مِمَّن تَنالُهُ مِنْكَ

allaahummaj-a'lnee fee maqaamee haazaa mimman tanaalohu minka

O, my God, in my immediate situation, treat me like him or her who obtains from You

صَلَواتٌ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَمَغْفِرَةٌ.

salawaatun wa rahmatun wa maghferatun

(Your) blessings, mercy and forgiveness.

اللهُمَّ اجْعَلْ مَحْيايَ مَحْيا مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

allaahumaj-a'l mahyaaya mahyaa muhammadin wa aale muhammadin

O, my God, bring me to life again, after death, to the place Muhammad and his Children are living;

وَمَماتي مَماتَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآل مُحَمَّدٍ.

wa mamaatee mamaata muhammadin wa aale muhammadin

make me depart from this world like the way Muhammad and his Children had left it,

اللهُمَّ إنَّ هَذا يَوْمٌ تَبَرَّكَتْ بِهِ بَنُو اُمَيَّةَ وَابْنُ آكِلَةِ الاكْبادِ،

allaahumma inna haazaa yawmun tabarrakat behee banoo umayyata wabno aakelatil akbaadi

O, my God, this day is a day of rejoicing for the "Sons of Umayyah", that herd of hardened criminals,

اللعِينُ بْنُ اللعِينِ عَلَى لِسانِكَ وَلِسانِ نَبِيِّكَ صَلّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ

la-e'enobnul la-e'ene a'laa lesaaneka wa lesaane nabiyyeka sallallaaho a'layhe wa aalehee

the eternally damned and accursed group, a fact that had been made public by You and by Your Prophet (blessings of God be on him and on his children).

في كُلِّ مَوْطِن وَمَوْقِف وَقَفَ فِيهِ نَبيُّكَ - صَلّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ.

fi kulle mawtenin wa mawqefin waqafa feehe nabiyyoka sallallaaho a'layhe wa aalehee

who, in every place and at all occasions, drew attention of people to this truism.

اللهُمَّ الْعَنْ أبَا سُفْيانَ وَمُعَاوِيَةَ

allaahummal-a'n abaa sufyaan wa mo-a'aweyata

O, my God condemn and damn Abu Sufyan, and Muawiyah,

وَيَزيدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِيَةَ

wa yazeedabna mo-a'awiyata

and Yazid son of Muawiyah,

عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْكَ اللَّعْنَةُ أَبَدَ الْآبِدِينَ،

`alayhim minka alla`natu abada al-abidina

and let it be an everlasting curse upon them from You.

وَهذا يَوْمٌ فَرِحَتْ بِهِ آلُ زِيَاد وَآلُ مَرْوانَ

va haazaa yawmun farehat behee aalo zeyaadin wa aalo marwaana

Today the descendants of Ziyaad and Marwan celebrate and party,

بِقَتْلِهِمُ الحُسَيْنَ صَلَوَاتُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ،

biqatlihim alhusayna salawatu allahi `alayhi

because they had killed al-Husayn, Allah’s blessings be upon him

اللهُمَّ فَضاعِفْ عَلَيْهِمُ اللعْنَ مِنکَ وَالعَذابَ الأليم.

allaahumma fazaa-i'f a'layhemul laa'-na minka wal a'zaabal aleema

Therefore, O, my God, double the curse You bring upon them and also the punishment You decree for them.

اللهُمَّ إنِّي أتَقَرَّبُّ إلَيْكَ في هذَا اليَوْمِ،

allaahumma innee ataqarrabo elayka fee haazal yawm

O, my God, I seek nearness to You today in this frame of mind,

وَفِي مَوْقِفِي هَذا ، وَأيَّامِ حَيَاتِي بِالبَرَاءَةِ مِنْهُمْ، وَاللعْنَةِ عَلَيْهِمْ،

wa fee mawqefee haazaa wa ayyaame hayaatee bil baraaa-ate minhum wal laa'-nate a'layhim

cutting off all links with them for the rest of my life, denouncing them

وَبِالْمُوالاةِ لِنَبِيِّكَ وَآلِ نَبِيِّكَ عَلَيِه وعَلَيْهِمُ السَّلام.

wa bil mowaalaate le-nabiyyeka wa aale nabiyyeka a'layhe wa a'layhemus salaamo

because of my love for Your Prophet and his Children, peace be on him and on them.

اللهُمَّ الْعَنْ أوّلَ ظالِم ظَلَمَ حَقَّ مُحَمَّد وَآلِ مُحَمَّد،

allaahummal-a'n awwala zaalemin zalama haqqa muhammadin wa aale muhammadin

O, my God, condemn and damn the first tyrant who unjustly and wrongfully usurped that which rightly belonged to Muhammad and the Children of Muhammad,

وَآخِرَ تَابِع لَهُ عَلَى ذلِكَ،

wa aakhera taabe-i'n lahu a'laa zaaleka

and bring curse upon those who, after him, followed in his footsteps.

اللهُمَّ الْعَنِ العِصابَةَ الَّتِي جاهَدَتِ الْحُسَيْنَ

allaahummal-a'nil e'saabatal latee jaahadatil husayna alayhis salaam

O, my God condemn and damn those conspirators who vexed and harassed Husayn,

وَشايَعَتْ وَبايَعَتْ وَتابَعَتْ عَلَى قَتْلِهِ.

wa shaay-a't wa baay-a't wa taaba-a't a'laa qatlehee

who with eagerness, came to a mutual agreement and joined hands to kill him.

اللهُمَّ الْعَنْهم جَميعاً

allahummal-a'nhum jamee-a'n

O, my God, bring a curse upon all of them.

السَّلام عَلَيْكَ يَا أبا عَبْدِ اللهِ

assalaamo a'layka yaa abaa a'bdillaah

Peace be upon you, O Aba Abdillah (Father of the servant of God),

وَعلَى الأرواحِ الّتي حَلّتْ بِفِنائِكَ،

wa a'lal arwaahillatee hallat befenaa-eka

and on those souls who came to your camp to put themselves at your disposal.

عَلَيْكَ مِنِّي سَلامُ اللهِ

`alayka minni salamu allahi

Peace of Allah be upon you from me

(أبَداً) مَا بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ الليْلُ وَالنَّهارُ،

(abadan) maa baqeeto wa baqeyal laylo wan nahaaro

(forever) as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night

وَلا جَعَلَهُ اللهُ آخِرَ العَهْدِ مِنِّي لِزِيَارَتِكُمْ،

wa laa ja-a'lahullaaho aakheral a'hde minnee le-zeyaaratekum

physically as well as spiritually, until everything is fulfilled.

السَّلام عَلَى الحُسَيْن،

assalaamo a'lal husayne

Peace be upon Husayn,

وَعَلَى عَليِّ بْنِ الحُسَيْنِ ، وَعَلَى أوْلادِ الحُسَيْنِ،

wa a'laa a'liyyibnil husayne wa a'laa awlaadil husayne

and on Ali son of Husayn, and on the children of Husayn,

وَعَلَى أصْحابِ الحُسَينِ

wa a'laa ashaabil husayne

and on the friends of Husayn.

اللهمَّ خُصَّ أنْتَ أوّلَ ظالم بِاللّعْنِ مِنِّي،

allaahumma khussa anta awwala zaalemin bil-laa'-ne minnee

O, my God, let the curse I call down on the head of the first tyrant stick like a leech

وَابْدَأْ بِهِ أوّلاً ، ثُمَّ الثَّانِي،

wabdaa behee awwalan summas saaneya

and stay put for ever on the first, then on the second,

وَالثَّالِثَ وَالرَّابِع ، اللهُمَّ الْعَنْ يزِيَدَ خامِساً،

was saalesa war raabe-a' allaahummal-a'n yazeeda khaamesan

the third and the fourth. O, my God, damn and call down evil on the fifth, Yazid son of Mua'awyah,

وَالْعَنْ عُبَيْدَ اللهِ بْنَ زِيَاد وَابْنَ مَرْجانَةَ

-a'n o'baydallaahibna zeyaadin wabna marjaanah

and bring a curse upon Ubaydullah son of Ziyaad, ibna Marjanah,

وَعُمَرَ بْنَ سَعْد وَشِمْراً

wa o'marabna saa'din wa shimran

Umar son of Saad, and Shimr,

وَآلَ أبي سُفْيانَ وَآلَ زِيَاد وآلَ مَرْوانَ إلَى يَوْمِ القِيامَةِ.

aala abee sufyaana wa aala zeyaadin wa aala marwaana elaa yawmil qeyaamate

on the descendants of Abu Sufyaan, on the descendants of Ziyaad, on the descendants of Marwaan, until the Day of Judgement.

اللهمَّ لَكَ الحَمْدُ حَمْدَ الشَّاكِرينَ لَكَ عَلَى مُصابِهِمْ،

allaahumma lakal hamdo hamdash shaakereena laka a'laa mosaabehim

O, my God! (All) praise is for You (alone); praise of the "Ever-thankful to You", who glorify You whatever come to pass.

الحَمْدُ للهِ عَلَى عَظِيمِ رَزِيّتي.

alhamdu lillaahe a'laa a'zeeme raziyyatee

(All) praise is for God for my deeply-felt intense grief.

اللهُمَّ ارْزُقْني شَفاعَةَ الحُسَيْن يَوْمَ الوُرُودِ،

allaahummar-zuqnee shafaa-a'tal husayne yawmal woroode

O, my God, make available for me the recommendations of Husayn on the day I present myself before You,

وَثَبِّتْ لي قَدَمَ صِدْق عِنْدَكَ مَعَ الحُسَيْنِ

wa sabbit lee qadama sidqin 'indaka ma-a'l husayne

let me stand firm in safety before You on account of my sincere attachment to Husayn,

وَأصْحابِ الحُسَيْن الّذِينَ بَذَلُوا مُهَجَهُمْ

wa ashaabil husaynil lazeena bazaloo mohajahum

along with him and his companions, who sacrificed everything they had (heart, mind, soul and life)
